From Proto-Semitic *ḥaṣ́an-. Compare Tigrinya ሓጸነ (ḥaṣänä, protect, adopt), Amharic ኣጠነ (ʾaṭṭänä, raise a child), Arabic حَضَنَ (ḥaḍana, to hug, nurse, rear), Akkadian [script needed] (ḫaṣānu, embrace).
