Letter
ᨯ (ḍa)
- The 21st letter and 13th consonant of the Tai Tham Pali alphabet. In Pali it represents the voiced, unaspirated retroflex consonant /ɖ/, written <ḍ> in the Roman script.
- Pali ᩋᨶᩣᨳᨷᩥᨱ᩠ᨯᩥᨠ (anāthapiṇḍika, “Anāthapiṇḍika”)
- Northern Thai ᨯᩣ᩠ᩅ (daao, “star”)
Usage notes
In the modern vernacular languages, Northern Thai, Tai Lü, Tai Khün and Lao, this letter generally represents the voiced dental consonant /d/ in the onset and finally the dental stop (variously analysed as /t/ or /d/). This usage is parallel to, and may well be derived from, that of Mon, which uses Mon ဍ, the same letter as Pali ဍ (ḍa).
