Etymology

A Northwest Semitic loanword, attested as Ugaritic 𐎀𐎔𐎐 (ảpn, wheel of a chariot) and Hebrew אוֹפַן (ʾōp̄án, wheel of a chariot). The clipped variant has perhaps been connected vulgarly with πήνη (pḗnē, spool).
