Etymology

From ἑπτά (heptá, seven), but the medial voicing is unexplained. See ὄγδοος (ógdoos), which also shows medial voicing, and Old Church Slavonic седмъ (sedmŭ) (< *sebdmъ < *septmъ), with the same voicing.
