Symbol
- a non-printing digital character that prevents the formation of ligatures.
Usage notes
As an example, the German word Brotzeit is a compound of Brot + Zeit. Consequently, when written in fraktur, the adjacent t and z should not form a ligature tz as in *Brotzeit, but rather should remain separate letters: Brotzeit. This is accomplished by placing a zero-width non-joiner character between the two roots in the compound.
