Translingual

Etymology

  • An abbreviated cursive 𝓇 joined to the vowel.

Diacritical mark

◌˞

  1. (IPA) A rhotic hook; the standard diacritic used to show rhotacism

Usage notes

ʳ and ʴ are obsolete as generic IPA markers of a rhotic vowel. However, especially narrow transcription of English dialects may indicate a rhotic vowel with a more-precise choice of articulation than ◌˞, such as , ʴ or ʵ, for example [ɑᶹ], [ɑʴ] or [ɑʵ] for phonemic /ɑ˞/.

In a supporting font, the diacritic will accommodate superscript letters, such as ᵊ˞ ᶟ˞
