Translingual
Etymology
A nasal tilde ⟨◌̃⟩ doubled for intensity, as velopharyngeal frication is fricative turbulence in air forced through the velopharyngeal port and into the nasal cavity.
Diacritical mark
◌͌
- (extIPA) Indicates velopharyngeal frication (posterior nasal frication), usually of a consonant.
- Synonym: 𐞐
Usage notes
- Distinguish from two stacked nasal tildes, ⟨◌̃̃⟩, which indicates strong nasalization. The modifier letter ⟨𐞐⟩ may be used as a less ambiguous indicator of velopharyngeal friction.
