Etymology

Compound of 稲荷(いなり) (inari, fried tofu) + 寿司(すし) (sushi, sushi). The use of 稲荷(いなり) (inari, Inari, god of foxes) to mean "fried tofu" comes from the fact that fried tofu is said to be liked by foxes. The sushi changes to zushi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
