[noun] (Buddhism) practice of Buddhism, especially by monks
[proper noun] (historical) a monk, purportedly a native of 新羅 (Shiragi, Silla) who attempted to escape with the 草薙剣 (Kusanagi no Tsurugi, literally grasscutting sword), but was returned due to a rainstorm [early 14th–mid 14th c., attested in The Tale of the Heike]
