1. to divide equally; to share out equally

     Xiàng Yǔ shuò jī Péng Yuè děng, Qíwáng Xìn yòu jìnjī Chǔ. Xiàng Yǔ kǒng, nǎi yǔ Hànwáng yuē, zhōngfēn tiānxià, gē hónggōu ér xī zhě wéi Hàn, hónggōu ér dōng zhě wéi Chǔ. [Pinyin]

     Hsiang Yü had several times attacked P’eng Yüeh and the others when Han Hsin, the new king of Chi, appeared and began to attack Ch’u as well. Hsiang Yü became fearful and made an agreement with the king of Han to divide the empire, all the territory west of the Hung Canal to belong to Han and all that east of the canal to belong to Ch’u.

     Yuè rén dàoshàng yù gǒu, gǒu xià shǒu yáo wěi, rényán yuē: “Wǒ shàn liè, yǔ ruò zhōngfēn.” [Pinyin]

     A man from Yue met a dog on the road. The dog lowered its head and wagged its tail, saying: "I am the best hunter, and I would like to share half of my prey with you."

     Yèzhōng nǎi lìng zuǒjūn yòujūn shè jiāng míng gǔ zhōngshuǐ yǐ xū. Wú shī wén zhī, dà hài, yuē: “Yuèrén fēnwéi èr shī, jiāng yǐ jiāgōng wǒ shī.” Nǎi bù dài dàn, yì zhōngfēn qí shī, jiāng yǐ yù Yuè. [Pinyin]

     At midnight he ordered both the Left and Right wings to cross the river and beat drums on water to wait for further instructions. Hearing the sounds of the drums, the soldiers of Wu were frightened and exclaimed, “The army of Yue was divided into two wings to form a pincer attack against us.” Before dawn, they divided themselves in two wings to resist the attack, too.

中分

     “Mùjīng”, huò yún Yù Hào suǒ zhuàn. Fán wū yǒu sān fèn: zì liáng yǐshàng wéi shàngfèn, dì yǐshàng wéi zhōngfèn, jiē wéi xiàfèn. [Pinyin]

     Yu Hao is said to have written the book entitled Bulding Houses with Timber. In this book, a house is divided into three parts. The upper part is above the beam; the middle part is between the beam and the floor and the lower part is below the steps.
