Etymology
From 五 (go, “five”) + 反 (tan, a unit of measurement equal to about 1000 square metres, also spelled 段) + 田 (ta, “field”), literally “five-tan field”. The ta changes to da as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
Named after the fact that fields in the area used to be divided into plots of five tan. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
