Etymology
Compound of 南蛮 (nanban, “southern barbarians”, in reference to the Spanish and Portuguese traders of the 1500s-1600s) + 煙管 (kiseru, “pipe”),[1][2] perhaps from the way that the flower and stem are shaped roughly like a European smoking pipe. The kiseru changes to giseru as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
First attested in the 日本植物名彙 (Nihon Shokubutsu Meii, “Japanese Plant Names”), a reference work from 1884.[1]
