Etymology
From Old Japanese. First attested in a text from 729.[1]
Listed in Japanese dictionaries as a compound of た (ta) + 易い (yasui, “easy, simple, not difficult”), where the ta element is described as a prefix, either without any explanation, or vaguely as some kind of element to adjust the meter of a word.[1][2][3] Considering the words in which this element appears, the meanings, and words of similar sense prefixed by 手 (te, “hand”), this ta seems likely to be the ancient ta compounding form of 手 (te).
For this word tayasui, compare the similar formation of Korean compound 손쉽다 (sonswipda, “easy, simple, not difficult”), literally 손 (son, “hand”) + 쉽다 (swipda, “easy”).
The kanji spelling is an example of jukujikun (熟字訓).
