Etymology

Compound of 忘れ (wasure, “to forget, the 連用形(れんようけい) (ren'yōkei, “stem of continuative form”) of 忘(わす)れる (wasureru)”) +‎ 形見 (gatami, “momento”). The katami changes to gatami as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
