Etymology
From 新撰 (shinsen, “new compilation/selection”) + 万葉集 (Man'yōshū, oldest anthology of poems compiled in c. 759 CE).
Proper noun
新撰万葉集 • (Shinsen Man'yōshū) ←しんせんまんえふしふ (Sinsenman'efusifu)?
- a 私撰和歌集 (shisen wakashū, “privately-compiled anthology of poems”) in two volumes, thought to be compiled by Sugawara no Michizane around 893–913 CE, with the poems completely written in 万葉仮名 (man'yōgana)
