Etymology

Originally meant monthly, the shift in meaning can be attributed to Monthly Haiku Gatherings (月並句合), during the Bunka era (1804-1818). These events involved people submitting haiku, and the best ones were published.

In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the renowned haiku poet Masaoka Shiki criticized the often uninspired and conventional haiku produced at these monthly gatherings, referring to them as "月並調 (tsukinami chō)" - "tsukinami style" or "tsukinami tone."
