Etymology

From Old Japanese 癈ふ (sip-), attested in the Man'yōshū (c. 759) as 四臂 (sipi₁), hinting at an irregular change from yodan conjugation to kami nidan.^[1]^[2]

- 974, Kagerō Nikki:
  田(た)かへしなどするも、かうしひけるはと見(み)ゆ。
  Ta kaheshi nado suru mo, kau shihikeru wa to miyu.
  To do the things like cultivating the rice fields, it would be seen in ways that would have been paralyzing.
