Etymology
From the addition of 仙 (xiān, “Taoist immortal”) to the earlier 蓬萊島／蓬莱岛 (Péngláidǎo, “Penglai Island”) to distinguish it from Formosa, an actual island which had gained that name as a poetic epithet.
