Etymology

Compound of 藍(あい) (ai, “indigo color”) + 染(そ)め (some, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 染(そ)める (someru, “to dye”).). The some changes to zome as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
