Etymology

Compound of 車(くるま) (kuruma, “vehicle”) + 止(と)め (tome, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 止(と)める (tomeru, “stop”).). The tome changes to dome as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
