Letter

  1. (lexicography) a mark for palatalization, equivalent to IPA ʲ.
    Synonyms: ʹ, ʼ

Usage notes

Used to show extent of palatalization. For example, a dictionary may clarify that the orthographic sequence 'рств' in the word мытарстве (mytarstve) is usually pronounced рствꚝ [rstvʲ], with a palatal off-glide; that the more palatalized pronunciation рсꚝтꚝвꚝ [rsʲtʲvʲ] has an archaic feel, and that fully palatalized рꚝсꚝтꚝвꚝ [rʲsʲtʲvʲ] is obsolete.

Used in both Cyrillic and Latin script, the latter typically for Baltic languages.
