Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑀁𑀢 (maṃta) and 𑀫𑀁𑀢𑁂𑀇 (maṃtei, “speaks”), from Sanskrit মন্ত্ৰ (mántra). Cognate with Assamese মাত (mat), Chakma 𑄟𑄖𑄴 (mat), Kalasha mondr (“language”) and Hindi बात (bāt).
