Inherited from Old Javanese paṇḍe (“blacksmith; smith; skilled worker”), from Prakrit [script needed] (paṁḍia), from Sanskrit पाण्ड्यः (pāṇḍyaḥ, “best of the learned”), पाण्डित्य (pāṇḍitya, “cleverness”) or पण्डित (paṇḍita). Doublet of ꦥꦤ꧀ꦝꦶꦠ (pandhita).
