Inherited from Old Javanese paṇḍe (blacksmith; smith; skilled worker), from Prakrit [script needed] (paṁḍia), from Sanskrit पाण्ड्यः (pāṇḍyaḥ, best of the learned), पाण्डित्य (pāṇḍitya, cleverness) or पण्डित (paṇḍita). Doublet of ꦥꦤ꧀ꦝꦶꦠ (pandhita).
