First attested as Middle Korean 더ᇰ울 (tengwul) in the Childae manbeop (七大萬法 / 칠대만법), 1a, 1569.

Subsequently attested as Early Modern Korean 덩울 (tengwul) in the Dongguk sinsok samgang haengsildo (東國新續三綱行實圖 / 동국신속삼강행실도), 10:11b, 1617, as well as Early Modern Korean 덩욿 (tengwulh) in the same source, 17:57b.
