마름
Korean
Etymology 1
From Middle Korean 말ᄫᅡᆷ〯 (Yale: màlWǎm), 말왐〯 (Yale: màlwǎm), from 말 (Yale: màl, “water chestnut?”) + 밤〯 (Yale: pǎm, “chestnut”).[1]
First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 말ᄫᅡᆷ〯 (Yale: màlWǎm).[1] Compare Gyeongsang Korean 말밤 (malbam), which retains the shape of the original compound.
