First attested in the Eoje naehun, (御製內訓 / 어제내훈), 1475 , as Middle Korean 본ᄃᆡ〮 (Yale: pwòntóy), from 본 (Yale: pwòn, “origin”, 本) + -ᄃᆡ〮 (Yale: -tóy, adverbial suffix).
