Etymology
Some compound, the first component of which is first attested as Middle Korean 혀〮 (hyé) in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 23:78a[1], 1459, and subsequently also as Middle Korean 셔〮 (syé) in the Beophwagyeong eonhae (法華經諺解 / 법화경언해), 2:104a[2], 1463.
In compounded form, first attested as Early Modern Korean 혓가래 (hyeskalay) in the Baktongsa'eonhae (朴通事諺解 / 박통사언해), 1677, and subsequently also as Early Modern Korean 셧가래 (syeskalay) in the Mong'eoyuhae (蒙語類解 / 몽어유해), 1768.
