Sino-Korean word from 愛國歌, from 愛國 (“patriotic”) + 歌 (“song”).

• Phonetic hangul: [애(ː)국까/에(ː)국까]
  • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.

애국가 • (Aegukga) (hanja 愛國歌)

1. (North Korea) Aegukka, the North Korean national anthem.
2. (South Korea) Aegukga, the South Korean national anthem.

After North Korea's abandonment of peaceful reunification, the term (Aegukga) appears to have fallen out of use in North Korean state media, being replaced by 조선민주주의인민공화국 국가 (朝鮮民主主義人民共和國 國歌, Joseonminjujuuiinmin'gonghwaguk gukga, “National Anthem of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea”).
