재채기
Korean
Etymology
First attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean ᄌᆞᄎᆡ욤 (Yale: cochoyywom).
ᄌᆞᄎᆡ욤 is not the direct ancestor of Modern (jaechaegi). Both are derived via a nominalizing suffix, -m for the former and -ki for the latter, from the (unattested) verb *ᄌᆞᄎᆡ다 (*cochoyta, “to sneeze”).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [t͡ɕɛt͡ɕʰɛɡi] ~ [t͡ɕe̞t͡ɕʰe̞ɡi]
- Phonetic hangul: [재채기/제체기]
