Pokorny derives it from Proto-Indo-European *kot- (“dwelling space”), comparing words such as Proto-Germanic *kutą (“shed, hut, stall”), Old Norse kytja (“small cottage”), Ancient Greek κοτύλη (kotúlē, “cup, pint”); however, the relation and origin of all of these words is unclear. Also compare the cognates listed at Proto-Slavic *kotьcь (“cottage, paddock”).
