Pronunciation
IPA: (file)
Symbol
ǁ
- (IPA) the forward release of a lateral click.
- the tenuis velar or sometimes uvular lateral click, [k͜ǁ] or [q͜ǁ]
- (superscript ⟨𐞷⟩, IPA) [ǁ]-coloring such as the lateral release of a click (e.g. [𝼊𐞷], a retroflex click with lateral click release); or a weak, fleeting or epenthetic [ǁ]-release.
Usage notes
Technically, ⟨ǁ⟩ is only the forward clicked release, not the entire consonant. It is adequate for click sounds without a rear release, such as the tchick! tchick! command to prompt a horse in English. A full transcription of a click consonant requires a second letter to specify whether the rear closure is velar or uvular, and whether the click is voiced or nasal:
Velar Uvular Voiceless k͜ǁ q͜ǁ Voiced ɡ͜ǁ ɢ͜ǁ Nasal ŋ͜ǁ ɴ͜ǁ
The tie bar may be omitted, or the accompanying letter may be superscripted: ⟨ᵏǁ ᶢǁ ᵑǁ 𐞥ǁ 𐞒ǁ ᶰǁ⟩.
If the order is reversed, e.g. ⟨ǁ͜q⟩, that may imply that the velar or uvular release is audible (delayed release).
⟨ǁ⟩ might be confused with a double ⟨ǀ⟩, but that is unlikely to be a problem in practice: only one language, Damin, is known to have a double dental /ǀǀ/ consonant, and that language does not have lateral /ǁ/; besides, in Damin all clicks are nasalized, so even when listing with other languages the contrast would be /ǁ̃/ vs /ǀ̃ǀ̃/ (or more likely /ᵑǁ/ vs /ᵑǀᵑǀ/).
