Uncertain, but probably inherited. Possibly related to Ancient Greek αΌ€ΞΌΞ±Ο…ΟΟŒΟ‚ (amaurΓ³s, β€œdark”), Latin umbra (β€œshadow, shade”). However, Kloekhorst connect this and related Hittite words to Proto-Indo-European *mergΚ·- (β€œto flicker; to darken”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
