Etymology

Usually analyzed as earlier *pe-(H)ai or *poi-(H)ai, from Proto-Indo-European *hβ‚‚ey- (β€œto give, take”) (compare Tocharian B ai- (β€œto give, pay out”)) with the Hittite preverb π’‰π’‚Š- (pΓ©-e- /⁠pe-⁠/). However, Kloekhorst rejects this and argues for an i-present *h₁p-Γ³i-ei ~ *h₁p-i-Γ©nti, from *h₁ep- (β€œto seize”) (compare Sanskrit ΰ€†ΰ€ͺΰ₯ (āp, β€œto reach, obtain”)).[1]
