First attested as alsmaer in the 12th century. Compound of an unclear first element and Middle Dutch meere (pool) or mare (watercourse). The first element may be Middle Dutch Al (a personal name), als (alder, Alnus sp.) or Proto-Germanic *alha- (moose, Alces alces). The first element is not derived from alles (all) or aal (eel, Anguilla anguilla).
