First attested as ekerslato in 1083. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian slato (“ditch”). The first element may potentially derive from a (variant of) Old Frisian ekker (“farmland”). The first element is unlikely to derive from a personal name or from aker (“acorn”).
