English

Etymology

Derived from the word aerial, introduced as a trademark by Monotype.[1]

Pronunciation

  • Rhymes: -ɛəɹiəl

Proper noun

Arial

  1. (typography) A sans serif typeface designed by Monotype as a clone of Helvetica. Notably a default Windows font.

References

  1. ^ Omagari, Toshi (3 September 2012) “身近な書体:Arial [Familiar font: Arial]”, in tosche.net[1]:そこでMonotypeはaerialからeを抜いてArialとしました(いくら元の単語がaerialとはいえeが抜けると同じ発音にはならないので、エアリアルもまた不正解となります)。Monotype dropped the "e" from "aerial" to create "Arial" (though even though the original word was aerial, it wouldn't be pronounced the same without the "e", so "aerial" would also be incorrect).
