Etymology

15th century, either from or akin to Middle Low German bōle (thick board, 14th c.), probably from Proto-Germanic *bulaz (trunk; plank), and cognate with Middle Dutch bolle, Old Norse bolr (see there for more), English bole (all “tree trunk”), and further with the family of Bolle (round object), Ball (ball).[1]
