From Middle Dutch Bouterseem (c. 1300); an even earlier form Baltreshem lacking L-vocalization is also attested in an early 12th-century Latin text. Contains a name Bouter (corresponding to Old English Bealdhere, Old High German Baldheri or Baldhere; more at Bouterse) with the common toponymic element -em (corresponding to heem).
