Etymology

First attested as bruheze in 1300. Compound of Middle Dutch bru (slop, sludge, mud) and hese (brushwood) (see Old Dutch *hēsi (brushwood)). The toponym was later reinterpreted as brouwhuis (brewery). Compare Breudijk and Bruinisse. Formerly an independent village.
