Etymology

Italianized form of Sicilian Cannizzaru, from Sicilian cannizzaru (related to somewhere or someone related to reeds or wattle), from cannizzu (wattle), from canna. The town in the province of Catania was named after the surname, when a local family bought the place as a personal fief.
