First attested as casterloe in 1409. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch *caster (chestnut tree (Castanea sativa)) and rade (land cleared of trees). The second element was originally lo (light forest). No relationship with Latin castra (encampment). Compare Castelré, Casteren, Castert and Kasteren.
