From Middle Welsh Kernyw, from Proto-Brythonic *Körnɨw (compare Cornish Kernow, Breton Kernev). Probably ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂- (“head; horn”) and thus cognate with Welsh carn (“hoof”) and English horn.
