Darthuizen
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as derthesen in 1253. Compound of an unclear first element and the dative plural form of Middle Dutch hese (“brushwood”) (a common toponymic element; see Old Dutch *hēsi (“brushwood”)). The first element may derive from Middle Dutch dare (“boggy soil”) or from a term cognate to Old High German tart (“javelin”) and Old English daroþ (“javelin”).
