Etymology

First attested as derthesen in 1253. Compound of an unclear first element and the dative plural form of Middle Dutch hese (brushwood) (a common toponymic element; see Old Dutch *hēsi (brushwood)). The first element may derive from Middle Dutch dare (boggy soil) or from a term cognate to Old High German tart (javelin) and Old English daroþ (javelin).
