Attested in 1501 as 't Welreloo. A compound of the toponym Wel + lo (“light forest”),[1] the second part comes from Proto-West Germanic *lauh, from Proto-Germanic *lauhaz, from Proto-Indo-European *lówkos (“field, meadow”). Compare Dutch Wellerlooi.
