Etymology
While folk etymology connected it to Oger (“ogre”), the mountain's name actually derives from the formerly common spelling Heiger, from dialectal Middle High German Hej-Gêr, dr hej Ger (“high point, large spear”), composed of hej (“high”) (presumably a derivation from *hauh) and *gaiʀ (“javelin, spear”).[1]
