Epse

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as epse in 1195. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *apa- (river, current), more specifically from the hydronym *apa-isa. A derivation from the metathised form of Middle Dutch esp (aspen, Populus tremula) is not likely based on the oldest attestations.
