Frühe

See also: frühe

German

Alternative forms

  • Früh (southern, see usage notes below)

Etymology

From Late Middle High German früe (15th century), older *vrüeje, from Old High German fruoī, derived from Proto-West Germanic *frō (early). By surface analysis, früh +‎ -e.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈfryːə/, [ˈfʁyː.ə], [ˈfryː.ə], (chiefly southern also) [-e], (Austria also) [-ɛ]
  • Audio (Berlin):(file)
  • Hyphenation: Frü‧he
  • Homophone: frühe

Noun

Frühe f (genitive Frühe, no plural)

  1. (Southern Germany, Austria, otherwise rare or higher register) morning
    Synonym: Morgen
  2. (rare, chiefly nonce word) earliness, quality or state of being early

Usage notes

  • In northern and central Germany, this word is uncommon outside the expression in aller Frühe (early in the morning), although even this is far less common than am frühen Morgen / früh am Morgen. In said expression, the form Frühe is significantly more frequent than apocopated Früh. Otherwise, however, because of the southern nature of the word as such, the variant Früh is quite common, and even predominant in the expression in der Früh(e) (in the morning).
