Etymology
First attested as genemuden in 1275. Compound of the hydronym Genne (derived from Proto-Germanic *gan- (“bright, shining”)) and the dative plural form of Old Dutch *mūtha (“mouth”), an Ingvaeonic variant of munt (cf. Old Saxon, Old Frisian mūth). Compare Genne and Gennep.
