Etymology

First attested as genemuden in 1275. Compound of the hydronym Genne (derived from Proto-Germanic *gan- (bright, shining)) and the dative plural form of Old Dutch *mūtha (mouth), an Ingvaeonic variant of munt (cf. Old Saxon, Old Frisian mūth). Compare Genne and Gennep.
