From goidisdach (attested in 15th century in Middle High German), ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *Wōdanas dag, itself a calque of Latin dīes Mercuriī (“Wednesday; lit. day of Mercury”). Equivalent to Woodan +‎ Daach.
