Of uncertain origin; possibly from a Berber source like Tarifit aynaw (mute) (alternative form agnaw) i.e. “those who don't speak our language” (compare the similarly constructed Slavic term *němьcь (foreigner, literally not-speak), as in Polish Niemiec (German)).
